March 2010
Dear All,
Welcome to another SSCTS Newsletter. We have quite a lot to write about in this edition.
Late last year we advertised a Student Abstract Prize for presentation at the just concluded Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery Annual Meeting in Liverpool. Altogether we had over 40 submissions and 10 finalists. All 10 finalists’ abstracts were of very high quality and their presentations were fantastic. It was difficult to select a winner but, unfortunately, there had to be one. The winner was Deepak Chandrasekharan, a medical student from Oxford. You can see his Poster here. Many congratulations to him. All finalists were rewarded with free tickets to the dinner
In addition, we have some more videos with a new thoracic aortic surgery section and more added to the aortic valve surgery section. Also, we’re looking to adding more multimedia content to the site.
In our last newsletter we mentioned getting more students involved in sscts.org. To that effect I’m pleased to announce that this is happening. We have already put up some work by some students and there is much more being written. You can see some of the work already done here:
Over the next few days we will be posting pieces by other members. These will include:
- Surgery for Atrial Fibrillation
- History of Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery
- History of Valve Surgery
- Conduits in Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery
- Risk Scoring Systems – particularly the euroSCORE
- Pacemaker Code – a very simple guide.
- Lobectomy
So stay tuned for all of this, and more.
Best wishes,
Robert Ibe
