TOMORROW'S CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEONS

Tomorrow's Cardiothoracic Surgeons is a website dedicated to informing medical students and foundation trainees about a career in cardiothoracic surgery. Reforms to medical training in the UK make it increasingly important to formulate early and wise career decisions.  The old-style of surgical SHO rotation, which exposed trainees to most surgical disciplines in advance of specialisation, is no more!  Cardiothoracic surgery is a challenging and rewarding specialty that is under-represented in the undergraduate curriculum.  Moreover, difficulties in workforce planning have caused some negative publicity in recent years.  Whilst cardiothoracic surgery is undoubtedly a competitive specialty that consistently attracts the best candidates, there are real career prospects for dedicated and talented individuals.

This website is intended to support medical students in their studies and to optimise their chances of future success.  We are keen to help individuals develop an interest in cardiothoracic surgery.  The website contains a number of informative sections ranging from the history of the specialty to upcoming conferences and abstract deadlines.  We describe the structure of training in the UK and provide advice on how to excel in applications.  There is information on common operations and a list of recommended texts.  We will regularly advertise prize and award opportunities for medical students.  Links to important websites are summarised on a single page for easy navigation of the web.

We encourage you to register to access the full benefits of SSCTSIt is completely FREE and allows us to contact you on a regular basis with information on prizes, abstract deadlines and career opportunities.  We will NOT pass details onto anyone else for advertising.  We are keen to gain an estimate of the interest level of medical students in the UK towards the specialty and how that interest level changes over time.  To that end we will ask you about your interest level on registering and will send you a small electronic questionnaire when you graduate.

SSCTS, and the website, is intended to help YOU!  If you have any recommendations for improvement - please let us know.  We are always keen to learn from feedback.

Best wishes with your training.
