Training
This section is here to help to familiarise yourself with the path from medical student to consultant cardiothoracic surgeon. While it is primarily centered on training in the United Kingdom it aims to not restrict you to only what goes on in the UK. This is because the field of cardiothoracic surgery is becoming evermore a global field.
Here you will find a section on the training pathway, one on the training syllabus (based largely on the ISCP syllabus), a section on tutors available in your area, some very relevant reading material, which also includes the references for the common operations, and on very important section on available prizes and grants.
The links are all at the top of the page, and below. While we recommend you start with, and get comfortable with, the section on the Training Pathway you are in no way restricted to do so before going on to the other pages in this section, or indeed on this website. Please feel free to follow any of the links at anytime you chose.
If at anytime you have any queries of comments please do not hesitate to contact us. In addition, don’t forget to tell us what you think of the website. Remember, it is designed with you the medical student in mind and for you.
We hope you enjoy using this site and its resources.
Below is the link to a short video from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (USA) in which Cardiothoracic Surgeons give their views on what it is to be a cardiothoracic surgeon. We encourage you to see it.
